…well, not really. Apparently the tech community is in an uproar over Apple’s Software update. So far today I’ve seen two top rated Digg stories on the subject, you can see them here and here. Cry more. I think this sums up the ignorance entirely: “What they did yesterday was to use their updater for iTunes to also install their Safari Web browser.” 100% fail. The Apple Software Update works the same on Windows as it does on Mac. It keeps all Apple branded software up to date. It’s not a trick, or a ploy. It’s always worked that way. It’s not an iTunes updater. iTunes has been tied to the master software updater in its shameful Windows incarnation for quite some time now.
Now, the whiners would have a point if this was malware or spyware, but it’s not. It’s a browser, and unlike IE it can be deleted if you want. Or you can uncheck the box that says “Safari 3.1″ and move on with your life, it’s that simple. And the software updater isn’t a program that runs hidden on your system repeatedly asking you to install it’s offering of applications, it has to be manually called.
And this complaining about Safari checking to see if it’s the default browser I’ve seen in the Digg comments? Grow a pair and deal with it. Every browser I have ever installed on any computer and on any operating system has done this. That means Firefox, Safari, Avant, Camino, Opera, and Konquerer. You click no, if you don’t want it to be your default browser, and then if you’re the type of person who gets annoyed by that sort of thing, you go on being stupid (and probably using Windows).

I am happy now.
(I am just waiting for some satirically-deficient Apple-hating white boy to pick up on this and run with it).
We need some weekend entertainment.
