This thing is stupider than the Violet Blue nonsense that got everyone’s undies all up in a bunch:
Apple Doesn’t Care About its Customers
Okay some dude spilled water over his MacBook Pro and completely admitted it was his fault, but was getting all pissed off at AppleCare for two reasons:
1. He had a hard time getting a straight answer on how to get it repaired
Okay if that is true, that is a legitimate complaint.
2. Apple (how dare they!!!) would charge $300 to diagnose the problem with no guarantee that it could be repaired for that $300 or even repaired at all.
After complaining to Steve Jobs:
Dear Steve Jobs,
I wanted to write and express my concern about some recent problems that I have had with Apple Care. This week, my MacBook Pro unfortunately sustained water damage. I understand this is entirely my fault but it is still something I would like to get fixed. After three or four calls I was finally able to get a straight answer. While I was happy to get a straight answer, I was not at all happy with the answer. It is very worrisome to me that the only way to get my computer fixed is to pay almost $300.00 up front with no guarantee that this will fix the problem. I was horrified to learn that their is no system to assess the problem and bill once all damage is known. I am reluctant to put money into a problem that could easily grow. I have had three Apple computers in a row. I love using them but I am not sure if my replacement will be one. I feel powerless in the situation and the whole experience has turned me off of the Apple company.
Sincerely,
Xxxxxx Xxxx
They got the following reply:
Xxxxxxx,
This is what happens when your MacBook Pro sustains water damage. They are pro machines and they don’t like water. It sounds like you’re just looking for someone to get mad at other than yourself.
Steve
ROFFLE!
The comments on that article explain why this complaint is worthy of vistards:
I am not specially Pro or against Apple but for this specific case the answer from apple is maybe not the most polite but I think they are right !
Try to ask a company who extract data from damaged hard drives for example. You have to pay a fee in advance in order to do an estimation.
Do you really think that any company are willing to pay investigations for damages caused by their customer outside of the warranty ???
stop believe in Santa !
300 bucks seems a reasonable price to pay given they are prolly going to have to replace the motherboard.
Worked for AT&T and HP and seen many a water damaged phones and computers. Not guaranteeing that a certain action will fix a water damaged device is pretty standard in my experience (esp when dealing with cust serv). Its not like a crashed hard drive or dead fan, swap em and you’re good. Water can short things out that you don’t realize and not cause problems till well after you thought the problem was fixed, even months after. It is next to impossible to access the affect water has on something like a laptop. Sucks? Yep, but its the way o the world. Fix what you can and cross your fingers
It does sound like it was jobs, naturally hes an arrogant guy you can read about him online…
And the customer got the answer they deserved.
Hello??!!?? you got water on the product. THERE WILL NEVER BE A WARANTY THAT COVERS THAT. Im glad they sent him that, hes an idiot. why do people expect so much for their own mistakes?
Although, I will admit, there was a high-snark-level in the reply, I don’t really understand why everybody is so appalled. The owner is responsible for the damage, and there is no guarantee that $300 could repair the notebook.
What do you expect Apple (or any other corporation) to do in this situation? Give away freebie replacement products to their careless customers?
In my experience water and electronics do not mix.
I usually like the Geeks are Sexy blog. But this article just plain bratty whining:
There’s no doubt about it; Apple has an extremely dedicated fan base. From waiting in line a whole week for a phone, to writing books and creating movies dedicated to the Apple experience, we’d say that this ungrateful corporation is lucky to have such a following. With this kind of loyalty, you’d expect Apple employees to treat customers with, at the very least, courtesy and respect.
Wah, wah, wah. The dude is bitching because God forbid, because he was stupid enough to spill water on his laptop, he thinks Apple should give him some kind of impossible guarantee for his stupidity? And Apple responding to stupidity with stupidity is saying “we hate you”? No, chickedee, it is Apple saying, “Dude, you are whining and pissing and moaning about your own stupidity. Go change your diaper and get back to us when you have some sense.”
Once again the readers, have more sense than the blogger:
This is stupid, what do you expect a company to do if you are stupid enough to spill water on your laptop? You sure don’t e-mail the company unless you bothered to buy insurance. Idiot.
“[…]we’d say that this ungrateful corporation is lucky to have such a following.” – That’s just plain stupid. Apple is popular because their products are awesome, and I agree with the first comment. What do you expect when you are dumb enough to spill water on your laptop and then even send a complaint to the CEO of the company, like he’s got time to deal with individual customers.
What a numbnut, as much as i hate Apple, this is silly. If the numbnut drove his Chevy into a telephone pole would he expect GM to fix it for free? Stupid.
Good for Steve. I am a staunch Apple-sucks girl, but anyone who whines after pouring liquid in any laptop/handheld/mobile/desktop/server/mainframe/etc deserves the attitude. DUH! You should have purchased insurance for your $2500 laptop, just like you did for your $2500 couch. If your apartment floods, the sofa company does not offer a $300 guaranteed fix for that. They offer none. Laptops are cheaper to replace than fix, in many cases.
The guy wanted Apple to take a look on his Mac without him paying anything, it doesn’t work like that, Apple actually need to pay their employees you know. He ruined the warranty when he was dumb enough to spill water on it, it would be stupid for Apple to actually pay for their customers’ mistakes.
So basically peeps were upset that the email was snarky? HELLOOO!!! This is Apple. Ever watch the I’m a Mac commercials? Unless you are actively writing Dear Leader petitioning to get those removed for their snarkiness, shut your pie-hole.
I would be honoured to get a snarky email from Steve. That would so rock. I would frame it. And burn a candle to it. Perhaps using one of these:

5 prayers have been offered in " Another whiner…. (and yeah I think Steve wrote the email himself) "
Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackLol, please note that this was written by our youngest contributor.. I was considering removing the post yesterday evening, but decided to keep it anyways….
There’s about 5 persons writing for us.. so there ought to be some differences in their point of views..
I really do want Steve to write me a rude email. I wonder if a petition will help.
I once got told off by this theologian that I respect, and it made my year.
But on the serious side – I really think that the customer got what they deserved. The first complaint was valid if they couldn’t get a straight answer, but that is not what everyone is ranting about. This guy was whinging because Apple wouldn’t guarantee a water damage fix nor waive a diagnostic charge. It is that guy who should be getting the ire thrown at him, not whoever wrote that email. And I do believe it was Steve. I have seen others written by him, and if it isn’t Steve, it is someone who gives off the same vibe.
I’d be completely impressed that the CEO of a multi-billion dollar company responded to my whiny email. And the fact that he stood his ground while diagnosing a problem (in a humorous, vaguely ministerial way) makes it all just awesome.
Yippie ki yay.
Precisely. It is like when Steve responded to the uproar when Fake Steve Jobs was claiming he was getting sued by Apple:
I think this is a joke and I think you’ve been fooled.
What is wrong with people that they don’t realize insurance =/= warranty.
Warranties cover breakage under expected use, insurance covers it when YOU break it.
